The 90s Grunge Muse for Marc Jacobs
From stealing to posing in one.
From starring in classic films like Edward Scissorhands, Girl, Interrupted, Black Swan, to a more recent Stranger Things, Winona Ryder has always been known for her grunge style with a white tee, leather jacket, and mom jeans in the 90s.
Having stolen more than $5,500 worth of designer pieces from a store in 2001, one of them being a Marc Jacobs sweater, she is now redeeming herself by being the glam-grunge face of Jacobs’ J Marc shoulder bag.
Caught on camera for shoplifting in a Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills in December 2001, Ryder was found guilty of felony grand theft and vandalism with three years probation, 480 hours of community service, and a fine, after a six-day trial; one of the steals being a $760 Marc Jacobs cashmere sweater.
For the trial, she wore a black Marc Jacobs A-line sweater midi dress with bow details on the neckline, paired with black Mary Jane heels. The preppy look was fitting enough for Ryder to defend herself in court.
Having heard the news, Jacobs being the marketing genius that he is, went on to twist the incident into a marketing ploy. He casted Ryder in his Spring 2003 ad campaign, “I asked Winona to do the campaign because I thought she looked so beautiful in all these pictures that we’ve seen recently, regardless of whether they were from the trial.” When Jacobs asked Ryder to pose for the shots, the actress sent him flowers and a note saying, “I’m thrilled that you asked me. It’s a great honor.”
In 2015, he made her the spokesperson for the launch of Marc Jacobs Beauty and now the face of J Marc shoulder bag campaign.
Captured by Harley Weir and styled by Emma Wyman, Ryder was dressed in a Marc Jacobs’ black runway archive dress with low-cut neckline, a lime J Marc, a pair of mustard Kiki boots, topped with choppy pixie haircut and black liner eye makeup that matched her nail color and is a reminiscent of her spotlight days.
In another shot, Ryder was showing her mischievous smirk colored with a dark lip liner, styled in a black long top, black tulle skirt, flaunting a contrasting tangerine J Marc, and a pair of emerald green Kiki boots.
Posing with a black and white J Marc colorway, Ryder was clothed in a red circle cut-out top with a black leather and lace details dress underneath, and a pair of black Kiki boots.
The J Marc shoulder bag seems pretty versatile since it’s not too small nor too big, with the famous J closings and chunky chain, that you can wear as a shoulder bag, cross-body bag, or a clutch during day and night. With bright and neutral color selections, and Ryder as the muse, this everyday bag is anticipated to be an essential in street-style ensembles.
